Morphology: |

Pennate unicellular diatom with raphe lying within a keel along both margins of both valves. Long and relatively narrow in valve view, either straight or sigmoid.

Similar genera: |
||||
Surirella is more robust - wider and more heavily silicified, and not restricted to acidic habitats (Lowe 2003).

Freshwater, mainly acidic habitats.
