Classification:

Cavinula  D.G.Mann and A.J.Stickle 1990;  18 of 25 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically.

Order Naviculales;  Family Cavinulaceae

 

Morphology:

Uniseriate radial striae.  One or two chloroplasts, H=shaped in girdle view.  See description online.

Distinguished by the linear to round-elliptical valve shape, uniseriate striae, presence of nodules and distinctive terminal pores (Cvetkoska et al 2013).

 

 

Similar genera:

Navicula does not have uniseriate radial striae.

 

Habitat:

Freshwater, oligotrophic lakes and moist terrestrial areas.

Several species reported from the Canadian Arctic Archipelago (Antoniades et al 2009).
