Name derivation:

 Ancient Greek κόκκος (kókkos, “grain, seed”), neis is derived from naus; Latin navis: ship (Silva 1980)

 

Classification:

Cocconeis scutellum C.G. Ehrenberg (1863); 120 out of 771 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2014).

Order Achnanthales;  Family Cocconeidaceae

 

Morphology:

Unicells are a broad ellipse with a raphe on only one valve (monoraphes), and different sized punctae on the two raphes.

Similar genera:

 

Habitat:

Freshwater meroplankton, mainly littoral zone.  Frequently form a layer one-cell thick coating submerged surfaces.
