Mougeotia (Charophyceae)

Mougeotia sp. from a lake in NH USA
Chloroplast in one cell has rotated 90 degrees to minimize exposure to sunlight. Sometimes a chloroplast gets twisted when one end turns in one direction, and the other end turns in the opposite direction!

Mougeotia sp. with a twisted chloroplast (when avoiding sunlight chloroplasts turn sideways;  in this case one end didn't know which direction the other end was turning!).
