Mougeotia  C.Agardh  1824;  166 of 198 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013) .

Synonyms in Phycokey: Mougeotiopsis, Debarya

 

Morphology:

Thalli unbranched, forming intertwining filaments. Cells cylindrical, 5 to 30 µm in diameter, much longer than wide; cell wall two-layered with inner cellulose, outer mucilage layer. There are no flagellated stages; a few species with one- or two-celled basal branches that anchor filament. Cell uninucleate; chloroplasts one per cell. Its single nucleus is found halfway along the length of the cell.

 

Similar genera:

Two related non-desmid conjugating characeans are Spirogyra that has helical chloroplasts, and Zygnema with two stellate chloroplasts.

 

Habitat:

Widespread in freshwater habitats worldwide. Filaments usually found as free-floating masses or ‘clouds’ resting on sediment.
