Classification:

Didymocystis  Korshikov  1953;  2 of 6 species descriptions are currently accepted  taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013)

Order Chlorellales;  Family Oocystaceae

 

Morphology:

Colonies of green non-flagellated uninucleate cells each with one chloroplast.

 

Similar genera:

Cosmarium (placoderm desmid) and Dicellula can easily be confused with Didymocystis in general shape.

 

Habitat:

Freshwater plankton.

[Genus name not to be confused with the same name for helminth fish gill parasites, Didymocystis Ariola, 1902].
