Classification:

Hydrurus C.Agardh, 1824;  1 (H. foetidus) of 8 described species are taxonomically accepted (Guiry 2012)

Order Hydrurales;  Family Hydruraceae.

Morphology:

Large (often 30 cm or larger) pseudofilamentous branched ‘bushy’ thalli with apical growth.  Cells ovoid, 5 x 10 μm.  Has a distinctive ‘foetid’ odor. Dark brown to yellow.

Hydrurus can be described either as a non-flagellated colony or as pseudofilamentous, and can be found along both trails in PhycoKey.

Similar genera:

Cellullaria.

Habitat:

Benthic;  attached to rocks in cold streams; similar to Cellullaria.  Mucilage dissolves when warmed, collapsing the thallus.
