Classification: |
Snowella Elenkin 1938; all 7 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).Order Chroococcales; Family Gomphosphaeriaceae
Molecular sequence: |
Similar (91.1%) to Woronichinia based on partial 16S rRNA gene sequences (Williame et al. 2006). |
Morphology: |
Small spherical colonies embedded in a watery mucilageinous matrix. Spherical cells joined to stalk ends, distant from each other, variable color from pale cyano to hints of yellow or pink. Colonies replicate by disintegration into small clusters of cells or even solitary cells (Guiry and Guiry 2013). |

Freshwater to slightly brackish plankton.
