Trichodesmium? sp. from freshwater habitats:  Sand Hills subirrigated lakes and in shoals of the Calamus Reservoi rin Nebraska. Photograph by William Beachley, Department of Biology, Hastings College, Hastings, Nebraska USA.  Both the bright green color of the rafts and the freshwater habitat are unusual, and reminiscent of Aphanizomenon colonies, although the trichomes are not tapered and there is no cell differentiation into haterocysts and akinetes.
