Classification:

Khawkinea  T.L. Jahn and W.R. McKibben  1937;  12 of 62 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2016).

Order Eutreptiales;  Family Astasiaceae

 

Morphology:

Colorless unicells with a stigma (eyespot), most likely derived from Euglena by loss of chloroplasts.

Similar genera:

Astasia has no stigma

 

Habitat:

Freshwater, or parasites in freshwater flatworms, copepods and annelids.  Widespread (Ibid.)
