Order Eutreptiales;  Family Astasiaceae

Morphology:

Colorless osmotrophic unicells with one emergent flagellum that is mobile throughout its length (unlike the stiff flagellum of Euglena), cylindrical (not flattened), 6 to 8 diminutive helical ‘flutes’ (shallow keels), 10 - 35 μm long, with abundant paramylon bodies mainly as oval loops (links).  Cell walls are rigid (Leedale 1967).
