Classification:

Sphenomonas  Stein  1878;  15 of 23 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Eutreptiales;  Family Astasiaceae

Morphology:

Colorless osmotrophic unicells with two emergent unequal flagella, one projected forward that undulates along its entire length, the other much shorter curving backward. Cell cylindrical with one to several diminutive helical ‘flutes’ (shallow keels), 10 - 35 μm long, with abundant paramylon bodies.  Cell walls are relatively rigid.  No observed phagotrophy or food vacuoles (Leedale 1967).

Habitat:

Freshwater and marine plankton, cosmopolitan.
