Name derivation:

 

 

Classification:

Urceolus C.von Mereschkowsky, 1879;  10 of 16 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Euglenales;  Family Peranemataceae

 

Morphology:

Colorless phagotrophic euglenoid with one flagellum emerging through a cytostome with a flared collar.  There is no record of a second non-emergent flagellum, but it is likely present (Leedale 1967).  More detail from William Bourland posted online.

Habitat:

Freshwater and marine.  Widespread distribution.
