Name derivation:

 

 

Classification:

Balbiania Sirdot 1876;  2 of 3 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Balgianiales (Sheath and Műller 1999); Family Balbianiaceae

Morphology:

Red filaments, uniaxial, branched, epiphytes on members of Family Batrachospermaceae.Cells cylindrical 3-5 µm and 30-90 µm long.  Several chloroplasts per cell  (Sheath and Sherwood 2011).

Triphasic life cycle:

1. Gametophyte carpogonia have an elongate and thin trichogye. 

2. Carposporophytes resemble gametophytes with tetrasporangia on short branches.

3. Sporophytes produce monospores 7-9 µm in diameter.

Similar genera:

Rhodochorton, to which some species of Balbania have been moved. (Swale and Belcher 1963).
