Classification: |
Acrochaetium Nägeli in Nägeli and Cramer 1858; 189 of 334 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 20123).Order Acrochaetiales; family Acrochaetiaceae
Morphology: |
A very difficult group (i.e. acrochaetoid red algae) that is variously delineated taxonomically. Typically it consists of small, uniseriate branched filaments that contain many plastids/cell. Apparently can modify pigments sufficiently to appear either red or green. |
Similar genera: |
Acrochaetium, Audouinella, Balbiania, Colaconema, and Grania Balbiania may be synonymous, at least some of its species have been relocated to Rhodochorton (Swale and Belcher 1963). |
Habitat: |
Often found as a small microscopic epiphytic on Batrachospermum and diverse larger seaweeds.
