Name derivation:

 

Classification:

Botrydium  Wallroth 1815;  11 of 13 described species are currently accepted (Guiry 2012).

 

Order Botrydiales;  Family Botrydiaceae

Morphology:

Balloon-shaped coenocytes, 1-2 mm in diameter, usually green and encrusted with lime (CaCO3) precipitate.  Short rhizoids are embedded in surface of soil.

 

Similar genera:

Protosiphon (Chlorophyceae) appears similar morphologically, and inhabits a similar soil habitat.  The genera can be identified with positive (Protosiphon) or negative staining (Botrydium) with an iodine solution (e.g. Lugol’s Solution, a triiodide solution in water).

 

Habitat:

Damp soil.
