Non-flagellated spherical (15 µm) or elongate (up to 110
µm) unicells attached to a substrate often as an
epiphyte. Two unequal wall parts, the
more apical smaller than the more basal portion and often stained brown, and
1 to many chloroplasts.. Biflagellate zoospores have unequal
flagella and a stigma (eyespot) and may become amoeboid (Guiry
2012).

At least one species (C. African) may be
transferred to Ophiocytium
(Guiry 2012).
Characium
and Characiopsis
are also similar.
C. saccharophilum is
considered as synonym of Chloroidium saccharophilum(Krüger), and was
previously assigned to Chlorella saccharophila (Darienko et al.
2010).
