Morphology:

Non-flagellated spherical (15 µm) or elongate (up to 110 µm) unicells attached to a substrate often as an epiphyte.  Two unequal wall parts, the more apical smaller than the more basal portion and often stained brown, and 1 to many chloroplasts..  Biflagellate zoospores have unequal flagella and a stigma (eyespot) and may become amoeboid (Guiry 2012).

At least one species (C. African) may be transferred to Ophiocytium (Guiry 2012).

Characium and Characiopsis are also similar.

C. saccharophilum is considered as synonym of Chloroidium saccharophilum(Krüger), and was previously assigned to Chlorella saccharophila (Darienko et al. 2010).
