Classification:

Gloeobotrys  Pascher  1930;  14 of 22 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2012).

Order Mischococcales;  Family Gloeobotrydaceae

 

Morphology:

Non-flagellated ellipsoid cells with a few parietal chloroplasts in a mucilaginous colony.  Produce both autospores and zoospores.

 

Similar genera:

 

 

Habitat:

Similar to many tribophyceae (old: xanthophyceae) they occur in spaghnum bog plankton but also in soil, as in Europe, North America and Asia.
