Green sea slug Elysia chlorotica ingests Vaucheria litorea cells, extracts chloroplasts and transfers them into its own cells, then manufactures chlorophyll, photosynthesizes, and survives on autotrophy alone. "It is the first known molecular evidence for active transcription and translation of algal chloroplast genes in an animal host" (Mujer et al. 1996). Video is online.

Mujer, C., D.L. Andrews, J.R. Manhart, S.K. Pierce, and M.E. Rumpho 1996. Chloroplast genes are expressed during intracellular symbiotic association of Vaucheria litorea plastids with the sea slug Elysia chlorotica. Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 93:12333-12338.
