Name derivation:

“Unequal flagella”  Gr. Aniso- unequal, -nema thread

Classification:

Anisonema  Dujardin  1841;  21 of 60 species descriptions are currently recognized (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Euglenales; Family Peranemataceae

 

Morphology:

Colorless biflagellate phagotroph, flattened ovoid shape.  Two unequal length flagella, the shorter propelling the cell, the longer one trailing and up to 3x the cell length.  Anterior flagellum beats with a sweeping motion. Gliding movement interrupted by backward jerks. No ingestion organelle is visible with the light microscope. Reservoir on left side of cell (Larsen and Patterson 1990).
