Many of the amoeboid chrysophyceae build protective silica 'tests' with an opening through which they extend one or more rhizopodia or pseudopodis. The rhizopodia can be simple or branched reticulopodia, and are used to collect particles such as bacteria. The particles are then ingested by phagocytosis.
