The unicellular chrysophyceae
are either flagellated heterokonts (two differently
shaped flagella, one having mastigonemes and dominant
in propulsion, and the other usually shorter, lacking mastigonemes
and less active, probably more for directional steering) or sessile
semi-amoeboid with rhizopods that collect
bacteria. Some genera such as Rhizochrysis,
while amoeboid during most of their life cycle, have a flagellated stage that
may last a short time before settling and again becoming amoeoid. Some flagellated genera, e.g. Chromulina,
have only one flagellum extending beyond the cell membrane but retain only
the base of the second one, having been reduced during evolution from two
extended flagella. |
