Name derivation:

From the Greek rhabdos –a rod, and gloios- glutinous, gelatinous, sticky

Classification:

Rhabdogloea  Schröder  1917;15 of 16 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Synechococcales;  Family Synechococcaceae

Morphology:

Colonies of fusiform cells without distinct sheath

Similar genera:

Synonym with Dactylococcopsis (Geitler)

Habitat:

Most species are planktonic in lakes and reservoirs. Some are found within the mucilage of Microcystis colonies.
