Name derivation:

 

 

Classification:

Isthmochloron  H.Skuja  1948;  3 of 6 species descriptioins are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Mischococcales;  Family Pleurochloridaceae

Synonym: Pseudostaurastrum (Tribophyceae) but not Pseudostaurastrum (Eustigmatophyceae).

 

Morphology:

Unicell with four branching arms, yellow-green to olive green, 10 – 12 μm diameter.  Similar in shape to some placoderm desmids, but has an entire cell wall.

 

Similar genera:

Arthrodesmus (Charophyceae), some species, from which species were separated and moved to Isthmochloron (Skuja 1948).

Tetraedron (Chlorophyceae) is essentially identical morphologically.

Pseudostaurastrum (Eustigmatophyceae) is also easily confused with Isthmochloron.

 

 

Habitat:

Freshwater.  Reported only from Europe (Johnson 2011).
