Classification: |
Woronichinia Elenkin 1933; 19 of 23 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).Order Chroococcales; Family Gomphosphaeriaceae |
Similar (91.1%) to Snowella based on partial 16S rRNA gene sequences (Williame et al. 2006). |
Morphology: |
Spherical colony of obovoid to
elliptical unicells (3.5 – 5 microns wide, 5-7 microns long) located on the
periphery, at the outer end of mucilage threads that radiate from the center
of the colony. Center of colony has
thick mucilaginous stalks, nearly as wide as the cell diameter, packed
together and radiating toward the periphery.
Stalks may become confluent so you can’t see them (Komárek and Anagnostidis
1998).

Similar genera: |
Phenotypic similarity: Coelosphaerium, Gomphosphaeria (thicker mucilage threads), Microcystis (no threads, cells throughout colony not concentrated on periphery), and Snowella. Woronichinia naegeliana (Unger) Elenkin is considered synonymous with Coelosphaerium naegelianum Unger and Gomphosphaeria naegeliana (Uniger) Lemmermann (Guiry and Guiry 2014). Molecular similarity: Snowella based on 16S rRNA gene sequences (520 bp) (Williame et al. 2006). |

Habitat: |
Freshwater and marine plankton. |
